What's the Difference Between ACT and SAT?
Both the ACT and SAT Reasoning are accepted at most colleges and universities across the nation. For students who opt to take the ACT, the UC schools will want them to take the Optional Writing portion of the test in addition to 2 SAT Subject Tests. The CSU schools do not require the Optional Writing portion of the ACT.
View a ACT/SAT score comparision chart.
Seniors
Seniors who still need to take the SAT and/or ACT need to take the tests no later than December 2008. UC's and CSU's will not accept any SAT/ACT tests taken any later than December 2008. Students planning to apply to UC schools must also take 2 SAT Subject Tests in 2 different disciplines. Taking the SAT Reasoning and 2 SAT Subject Tests requires 2 separate testing dates, so plan ahead!
Fee Waivers
Students who are on the free/reduced lunch program take the PSAT, SAT, and ACT for free.
- 2 SAT Reasoning Tests
- 2 SAT Subject Tests (3 subject tests per exam day)
- 2 ACT Tests
Students who qualify for testing fee waivers may also qualify to apply to colleges and universities for free. This applies to UC's, CSU's, and some private/out of state colleges. Check the Directory of Colleges Cooperating with the SAT Fee-Waiver Service to see if a school offers a fee waiver to apply.
