College & Career Exploration Tools
Finding the right college is often a daunting task as there are many schools to choose from across the nation. It's not about picking the right name of the college or university but whether or not it is right for the student.Also, students need the opportunity to explore different career options, which will influence their course of study when choosing where they want to go for their higher education, whether it be at a 4-year college or university, community college, or trade school.
The following is a list of websites where students can view comprehensive information about careers and colleges.
MyRoad is the collegeboard's college and career planning website
www.myroad.com is free for all Chatsworth students. Students can create an account with the School Code: 050528.
Students are encouraged to take the ORA Personality Profiler, a comprehensive assessment in which students are able to identify their strengths and how they can be applied to specific careers. From there students are encouraged to explore careers and the schools which have the applicable course(s) of study. The profiler takes about 45 minutes, and it's fun!
With this account, students and parents can get SAT information, including information on preparing for the SAT. Students can choose to receive the SAT Question of the Day via e-mail. This allows students to see actual questions from the SAT exam.
MyPlan is college and career advice made simple
www.myplan.com has a Career Personality Test, a Career Interest Inventory, and a Career Skills Profiler. The site charges small fees for these tests. There is a Career Values Assessment Test which can be taken for free.After taking these tests, students are then directed to CareerMatch where they can find out what careers best match their personalities, interests, values, and skills. With CareerMatch, 748 careers are scored and ranked according student responses to any or all four of the career assessment tests.
The Princeton Review provides free on-line exploration tools
www.princetonreview.com is a comprehensive web site for students and parents. It provides students with the opportunity to take a free interest inventory which then matches their interests with appropriate colleges.
From there, students can begin to explore different colleges and universities. They can begin to look at admission requirements, average GPA's, and average SAT/ACT scores for incoming freshmen.
Students can also find information on SAT/ACT preparation. A free SAT Online Demo is available to students. The site also provides in depth financial aid & scholarship information with a free on-line scholarship search.
